Experience Diverse Cultures and Develop a Global Perspective

Immersed in the international city of Kyoto and a diverse academic environment, students gain practical proficiency in English and other languages. Beyond language learning, they explore global cultures and social issues through hands-on experiences. Students delve into a wide array of subjects, from history and religion to economics, business, food culture, arts, fashion, music, film, and pop culture. By using their personal interests as a gateway to regional studies and cultural comparisons, students gain deeper insights into global issues and the state of international society. Students develop a global perspective and the flexible mindset to engage with diverse cultures—equipping them with the skills to tackle global challenges and thrive in any country or region.

Features of Global Culture Course

Gain real-life language skills through study abroad experiences

From the first year, English language skills are developed in stages. Students can also study Korean, Chinese, French, and Spanish as a second language. In the fieldwork program, students are required to study abroad in the region they plan to visit. Students steadily hone their language skills for use in the field. Students continue to study English after their study abroad, aiming for a TOEIC score of 700 by the time of graduation. Students can further improve their language skills by taking advantage of out-of-class programs such as events in cooperation with partner schools abroad and courses to raise TOEIC scores.

What You Will Study

  1. 1STYEAR

Enhancing Language Skills and Building a Strong Academic Foundation

The first year focuses on acquiring the foundational skills necessary for studying at university. Students participate in small-group classes to build the essential language skills necessary for humanities studies—reading, speaking, and writing. They also gain experience analyzing topics from multiple angles—history, literature, society, international studies, and Japanese culture—nurturing a flexible and open-minded perspective.
Foreign language study is also a key focus, fostering cross-cultural understanding.
Languages Offered: English, Korean, French, Spanish, and Chinese

  2. 2NDYEAR

    Extensive Off-Campus Fieldwork

With guidance from faculty members, students carefully design their long-term fieldwork experience. In the second semester, they leave campus for six months of hands-on fieldwork. Through this experience, students cultivate independent thinking, practical skills, and the ability to communicate their findings effectively. The confidence and skills they gain here will be invaluable no matter where their future takes them.

  3. 3RDYEAR

Expanding Knowledge and Deepening Critical Thinking Through Specialized Courses and Seminars

As students compile their research reports from long-term fieldwork, they also gain expertise and research methodologies through courses in their respective fields. They also participate in small-group seminars where they analyze texts, present research, and engage in discussions on key themes. By exchanging ideas and engaging with diverse perspectives, students refine their thinking and deepen their understanding.

  4. 4THYEAR

Showcasing Four Years of Learning Through a Graduation Thesis

Students write a graduation thesis as the culmination of their four years of study, presenting their completed theses at the Graduation Work and Thesis Exhibition in February, just before graduation in March. This exhibition offers a valuable opportunity to receive objective feedback from both within and outside the university.

What You Will Learn

  • Ability to see things from a global perspective
  • Ability to propose a society in which diverse people can live together
  • Ability to accept different cultures and create new values

Fieldwork Programs

By staying in various parts of the world for an extended period of time and communicating with a diverse range of people, students deepen their understanding of different cultures. By living in local communities, we examine the issues facing not only Japan but also the world in more concrete terms. We will explore ways to overcome language and cultural differences and live in affluence through our experiences in the local communities.
  • Experience and deepen understanding of different cultures

Visit a country of interest and experience a different culture, including differences in food, housing, lifestyle, and communication. Through the multifaceted perspectives that can only be obtained locally, students will gain a new sense of values.

  • Research international issues

Analyze issues related to the environment, poverty, and other issues that affect the entire world. Conduct interviews in the field to learn the real voices of people. Explore ideas to improve society.
