RISD Manga Immersion + KYOTO INSPIRATION

Kyoto Seika University welcomed 14 students and 2 professors from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) for a 2+ week intensive summer program to study manga and Japanese culture.

Students attended lectures and workshops taught by Kyoto Seika University faculty, and supplemented this study with off-site field work that included a research trip to the Kyoto International Manga Museum, a joint venture between our university and Kyoto city, tea ceremony and Zen meditation experiences, and visits to art museums and world-famous cultural sites throughout Kyoto. In addition, group workshops and campus events enabled students from both universities to interact and forge international connections. While their time here was brief, we were thrilled to offer students from a close partner institution a taste of manga studies in the cultural heart of Japan.

An experiential program encompassing Japanese popular culture and traditional arts will be available for university students and graduates through our KYOTO INSPIRATION program beginning in the summer of 2025.
