ENSAD Limoges + Kyoto Seika University
Designing with Bamboo

Kyoto Seika University recently hosted a group of seven students and two professors from ENSAD Limoges in France. The students were visiting campus as part of a two-week overseas design program organized in collaboration with Kyoto Seika University’s Interior and Goods Design Course faculty members and students.
During their stay, the ENSAD Limoges students spent time studying alongside Kyoto Seika students to learn about bamboo and the wide range of design possibilities it offers. The program culminated with a group exhibition and critique at the Institut français du Kansai—Kyoto where students presented their bamboo designs based on one of seven different themes: light and shadow, bend and bow, flower vase, tableware, flowers, picnics, and traditional Japanese culture.

In his closing remarks at the exhibition, Professer Oosako remarked on the difference in design approaches between France and Japan. “I think it’s valuable for everyone here to understand that there is another way of doing things.”
Next year design students from Kyoto Seika University will visit ENSAD Limoges to continue this thought-provoking exchange collaboration.
