"What's Manga?" Now in English!

Originally published in Japanese in 2024, this new English translation serves as a gateway to understanding manga for an entirely new audience. Readers will be able to learn about what makes manga so compelling, as well as gain a basic understanding of manga research by exploring its history, development, and characteristics. With a wealth of accessible, engaging information, this book is sure to delight manga fans around the world. What’s Manga? and its translation into English, represents yet another way that Kyoto Seika University is engaging the world through manga. The university began holding manga education courses in 1973, and now offers both undergraduate and graduate programs. Students also have the opportunity to study manga theory through an undergraduate Japanese Studies Course in the Faculty of Humanities. Those who are interested in learning more about basic manga composition are welcome to refer to a series of online lectures by Kyoto Seika University Faculty of Manga professors, available for free on JV Campus.
